Blood Pressure Monitor:

If you have high blood pressure it's important to have a blood pressure monitor at home. It's even more important to have one that is accurate. I love getting patients to track their blood pressure several times per day to see if things like coffee, stress or low blood sugar are affecting their blood pressure. Also if symptoms pop up like dizziness, they can take their blood pressure to see if it's low blood pressure that's causing it. Having your own blood pressure monitor can help with "White Coat Syndrome" where your blood pressure goes way up when a health professional is taking your blood pressure. Some are falsely medicated for high blood pressure when this happens but their blood pressure is only high when it's being taken in a clinic.

Glucometer (blood sugar monitor):

Blood sugar monitoring is super important for controlling diabetes! Tracking and monitoring helps you become aware of what foods and drinks are affecting your blood sugar. It's also much easier to see how skipping meals affects blood sugar. I've had so many patients realize their blood sugar is high in the morning before they have breakfast and we've brought it down by incorporating a proper snack before bed. Many people think skipping meals would be good for your blood sugar but if we go too long without eating we'll raise our own blood sugar by secreting a stress hormone cortisol.

Fitbit:

Fitbits are great for tracking. I get patients who benefit from tracking to use the fitbit to track how many steps they've taken, how many calories they've burned and how far they've traveled. It's great feedback and if they see that they haven't met their goal yet it will be encouragement to strive to get more steps or burn more calories. if you're just using an app on your phone to track these things you won't get that constant reminder every time you look down. The fitbit has also been great to help patients realize their sleep quality is terrible. I've had quite a few who were exhausted all day realize it was because they weren't sleeping well and we were able to deal with whatever issue it was that was keeping them from getting a complete sleep. Being able to track heart rate has been great for those who have anxiety to actively try to get their heart rate down based on biofeedback from the fitbit, it's been great for training to be aware of how close to your goal heart-rate you are, and it's worked well for those who have heart conditions to see which situations will raise their heart rate (caffeine, stress, end of the day, etc...)

Misting humidifier:

Misting humidifiers are amazing for prevention and treatment of dry skin, sinus issues, dandruff and nosebleeds. I used to have super itchy sides and brutal dandruff until I started using a misting humidifier. They'll also make you feel way better waking up in the morning because your eyes are no longer dry. I believe half of the reason why we feel so tired in the morning is because our eyes are so dry. Check out my article on dry skin in the winter for more info.

Wireless Crock-Pot:

The main obstacle with most of my patients is not having enough time to make healthy meals. With a crock-pot or slow cooker you can throw a bunch of vegetables and meat in there and it's ready by the time you get home from work. It's like having your own chef. I've had quite a few patients express their fear that they are afraid their house will burn down so I like to recommend this wireless crock-pot, where you can control the temperature with your smart phone from work.
