How Hot Tubs Affect Your Blood Pressure

4/3/2013

Picture
If you’ve ever felt weird while in a hot tub or shortly after getting out of one you should read this. In general those who start to feel all weird while in a hot tub have low blood pressure and those who get it after getting out of the hot tub may have high or low blood pressure.

Blood pressure depends on a couple of factors: primarily fluid/blood volume, blood vessel resistance and cardiac output (the amount your heart has to pump out to replenish your body). I won't bore you with the details.

Click the read more tab if you're interested.

Here is a list of ways hot tubs affect your blood pressure:

1)      Gravity is less of a factor:
  • Your heart no longer has to pump blood against gravity in order to recirculate blood from your extremities so its output can be reduced. Blood returns to the heart much easier when you’re horizontal rather than vertical. Think about trying to pour gravy up a tube versus letting it run horizontally in a tube. The pumping action is less necessary.

2)      Less resistance because of vasodilation
  • Heat causes your blood vessels to dilate. The wider the radius of your blood vessels the less resistance your heart has to pump against. This means less pressure in the circulatory system. Think of when you put your thumb over the end of the garden hose to increase pressure versus letting it seep out naturally.

3)      Less fluid volume due to dehydration
  • Losing water: You may be in a big bucket of water but you’re still sweating the water you do have in your body into that bucket. With less fluid in your system your heart can take a break. Think of trying to crawl under an air mattress full of water versus one that has half as much water in it.
  • Losing sodium: sodium retains water so the more sodium you sweat out the less water you will retain, compounding the effect mentioned above.

4)      Mental relaxation
  • Your blood pressure drops when you are relaxed because your body is taken out of fight or flight mode, it no longer needs to put out as much blood as possible to your muscles to prepare you for action.

5)      Physical relaxation
  • Your muscles will loosen and warm up from the hot water, further reducing the need for your heart to have to warm them up and replenish them with nutrients. Another effect this has is decreasing resistance, if your muscles are not as tight the arteries and veins won’t have to work so hard to get blood past them.

6)      Temperature regulation
  • One of your heart’s major jobs is to keep you warm, since the hot water is already doing this your heart doesn’t have to work as hard.

The effects of hot tubs dropping your blood pressure too much can be: dizziness, fainting, weakness, light-headedness, reduced ability to concentrate, blurred vision, fatigue all mainly from a lack of blood flow to the brain. The longer you’re in the hot tub the more powerful effects these facts will have on you.

Once you get out of the hot tub these effects take place:

1)      Vasoconstriction
  • Once the air that’s cooler than the water you were just in hits your skin your blood vessels and pores will constrict. This constriction will increase the pressure in the cardiovascular system. Think about putting your thumb over the garden hose nozzle.

2)      Orthostatic hypotension
  • Since you’ve depleted a significant amount of fluid and it hasn’t been pumping forcefully back to your heart your blood pressure will temporarily drop. This can cause symptoms of low blood pressure immediately after standing up from the hot tub. If you have low blood pressure to start with, once you stand up it’s going to be difficult for your body to return to its regular blood pressure due to having to antagonize all of the factors hot tubs pose on you, particularly gravity.

3)      Rebound hypertension
  • Your body is programmed to maintain homeostasis so your blood pressure will rise again once you’re on your feet. If you have high blood pressure in general this extreme fluctuation may exacerbate your high blood pressure and cause hypertensive symptoms which you may only experience when stressed or at random times when  your blood pressure peaks.

The effects of your blood pressure increasing after getting out of the hot tub are pulsating pounding especially in the back of your head, fatigue, confusion, shortness of breath, anxiety, nose bleed, pounding chest, chest pain or irregular heartbeat

Tips: Don’t stay in the hot tub for longer than 15 minutes at a time. Consult with your Doctor whether you should be using hot tubs if you have a heart condition or previous history of blood pressure issues. Always have someone around when you use a hot tub. To take the guessing game out of whether your blood pressure is being affected by being in the hot tub invest in your own blood pressure monitor.
If going in or getting out of a hot tub provokes you to have any symptoms, it’s a good idea to get your blood pressure checked. These symptoms may be an indicator that you’re regularly walking around with low or high blood pressure but you’re just under the threshold of them posing a threat to your health. You should get on your blood pressure now before it goes too far either way and you suffer from a condition like a stroke or heart attack. Both hypotension and hypertension can be signs of other conditions.

As a Naturopathic Doctor, I treat people with low blood pressure and high blood pressure on a steady basis. Some individuals with high blood pressure need to be medicated while we work on bringing blood pressure down naturally. Most Doctors will tell you that low blood pressure is not anything to worry about. It may not be dangerous per se but can definitely be the root of your fatigue, light-headedness or general weakness. The most important thing is to find the underlying cause of why your blood pressure is too low or too high. The kidneys and adrenal glands both affect blood pressure as well so it's important to make sure they are in good health if hot tub-related symptoms occur.

hey from tn! would like your opinion on an incident that occurred last night with my 49 yo, diabetic, otherwise healthy boyfriend. we had returned from a run about an hour prior to getting into his whirlpool bath. he had maybe 1.5 glasses of wine. his immersion time was probably no more than 10 minutes. he then stood up to engage in intimate activities. after his climax, he bent over, very pale and stated he didn't feel well. he was very pale, heart was racing at about 120 bpm. heart rate stayed elevated for about 30-40 minutes following incident. I did not check his bp, it typically runs within normal limits. please share your thoughts with me. thank you!!

Hey Rachel,

Sorry for the delay!
I just noticed a bunch of comments that were pending approval :S
It's difficult to say but I'm assuming it had to do with blood pressure or blood sugar. I'd recommend telling his doctor about it and getting him thoroughly worked up to be on the safe side. I'd also recommend not doing all of those things in such a small time-frame as well.

Dear Dr. Gallant,

I have heard of a product called Emu Oil that was recommended for joint pain I have recently started experiencing. It is occurring from inactivity so it could be rheumatism although no one in my family or I have ever had any allergies/auto immune issues. Can you give me your thoughts? I am 54 y/o female, 135 lbs, 5'4", normal vital signs, but slightly low HR and low bp. Thank you.

I have low blood pressure and everytime I get out of a hot bath, I'm so hot. I get all lightheaded and my legs feel like jelly. It's quite scary actually. I'm constantly tired and everytime I stand up, I go blind for a few seconds and get lightheaded. The same happens when bending down, bending over etc. Informative article, thank you.

Hey Marie,

That must be pretty scary, it definitely sounds like your blood pressure is the main issue. Make sure you talk to your Doctor about these symptoms as well!

Very helpful info. I felt like I was going to faint after getting out of the bath this morning, but I also was drinking tea in the bath ! I have issues with blood going to my stomache to digest anything - and feel quite ill if I try to walk or anything after eating. Is this also due to low blood pressure do you think. Docs. have seen me and have not said it's serious. But it does make me feel awful and I can't go out to eat.

Dr. Justin Gallant ND link

Hey Tony,

Thanks for the comment.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by blood going to your stomach to digest. If you're truly concerned or bothered by this issue you should ask your family doctor yo refer you to a Gastroenterologist. Your blood pressure may play a role in feeling faint but it shouldn't make you feel ill after eating. My top 3 things to test for for people who feel ill right after eating are GERD, gallbladder issues and stomach issues. I hope this helps!

I have had Menieres since 1985 but have had a shunt put in and have learned to live with it. My B/p is NEVER hi. I went to a bathhouse and took a hot spring bath followed by a terrific massage. I have been drinking water to flush out toxins, however, since then I have felt slightly off kilter and a little nauseous. I take no RX meds, but do take supplements. Is there anything I can do to offset the nauseous feeling?

Hi I'm 21 in good health and today for the first time I went in a hot tub with some friends for about a half hour at about 104 degrees f. I got out and went on the patio, after about 10 seconds my hearing was muffled, was very dizzy and lost my balance (luckily I didn't fall) for about 30 seconds then immediately regained all of my senses. I was very weirded out by the sitiuation would it be possible to have clarification on the matter?

I believe the condition you are interested in researching is post prandial hypotension. I'm not a doctor, but as a person with mild gastroparesis and orthostatic hypotension it is something I deal with in my life.

Hey Gobber,

I would go to your GP to ask them.
It could have been because you got water in your ear canals but you would need a proper work-up to determine what the cause was.

Hi,
I also have tinnitus and have recently noticed some fluid going down my throat occasionally and I discounted this earlier. The doctor just asked if I have flu symptoms and he also checked for lupus in blood test(was negative).I regularly take hot water baths(almost everyday now)as I think it eases the bad neck pain(for about 2 months now) I have every time I try to turn my neck.I am seeing a physiotherapist who recommended stretching exercises which aggravates the pain so I also am doing massages. Can hot water baths be taken every day as I read it helps get rid of toxins. Its also been winter here, now breaking to spring.
Also what to do in case of inner ear infection as the doctor doesnt know to say anything about tinnitus. Thanks

Thank you for the info. After a hot bath I almost always feel dizzy, nauseous and my heart pounds. My tummy feels so swirly that I need to lay down. This first started happening with my first pregnancy 5 years ago, now it regularly happens. My blood pressure is always normal when at the doc.

Dr. Justin Gallant ND link

Hey Eva,

They might be telling you it's normal but it may actually be low. Conventional medicine doesn't see hypotension as an issue but it can definitely cause the issues you've listed above.

Everytime I take a hot shower for more than about 10 minutes, I get really really sick. I feel nauseous, I get weak, and my vision blacks out. The majority of the time I start throwing up, and a couple times I have passed out while still in the shower. I've tried to look for answers as to why this would be happening, but so far I haven't found any. Maybe you could help?
I haven't had any history of unhealthy blood pressure, everytime it's been checked at the doctor my blood pressure is close to perfect. But I am severely hypoglycemic, so maybe that has something to do with it?
I'm only 18, so I don't think I should be having any severe health problems so early in my life.. so I am even more anxious to find an explanation for these occurences. If you could, please reply, thanks (:

Dr. Justin Gallant ND link
5/13/2014 11:39:44 am

Your symptoms sound like they could be due to a combination of hypoglycemia and hypotension.
I would get your doctor to test for orthostatic hypotension.
Next time they take your blood pressure, write down the actual number. Sometimes they'll tell you its perfect because they don't think low blood pressure is a big deal. If it's less than 100/70mmHg, you could get these symptoms. You'll have to treat the hypoglycemia as well. Check out my blog about waking up between 1-3 am to learn more about hypoglycemia.

55 year old woman. Have high blood pressure, COPD, and hyperhomocystienemia.
The past year, everytime I take a shower, I start to vomit, which leads to shortness of breath and feeling like I am going to pass out. I sit down for a minute, and then continue my shower. And again this happens. When I get out of the shower, my face is beet red, and I am sweating profusely. I have my hubby turn the air down. I turn a box fan on and point it directly at me on high. I can hardly walk. I am so weak and feel like I am going to pass out. My cardiologist says my heart and arteries are fine. (with the exception of the high blood pressure). It has gotten to the point I am terrified to take a shower. I used to shower daily. Now I shower twice a week, but only wash my hair once a week to cut shower time down. I feel disgusting if I dont shower daily, and my hair is all greasy. I no longer leave the house because I feel disgusting without a shower. I don't know what Dr to see or what tests I need. My cardiologist ran so many tests. My GI doc did Endoscopy and Colonoscopy. Besides GERD caused Barretts Esophagus, I am fine. Can you please advise? Thankyou.

Can taking a hot shower or being in the hot tub lower your blood pressure right before going to bed if you already have high blood pressure?

Dr. Justin Gallant ND link
7/15/2015 10:32:19 am

Hey Edwin,

They can lower your blood pressure but I wouldn't use them as therapeutic measures to do so. It's difficult to estimate how low the BP will go and the rebound hypertension may cause dangerous effects.

Laying here on my couch after a hot bath. Got very dizzy after getting up out of it. Thanks for this post, definitely gave me some good info, and eased my mind. I just read a good suggestion about pulling the plug and running cold water to cool your body temperature down, then sitting up, then kneeling, then standing slowly. I take baths often, and this is only the second time it has happened. The bath was, admittedly, hotter than normal and im still nursing a bit of a hangover so I think my body might still be out of whack. I was also doing some deep breathing exercises while in the bath which I normally dont do. Ill keep an eye on it, but considering the lack of frequency, it seems to me like a bunch of factors contributed to my dizziness. Fontunately I did not lose consciousness (whew!) Thanks!

Sounds like the combination of a hangover and deep breathing probably brought your BP even lower at the time.

Hello! This was very informative. I usually never diagnose myself online because the symptoms can be false and make me paranoid. But I have ALL the symptoms after getting out the bathtub, I actually laid down on the floor when I got out for about 8 minutes just so the nausea and short of breath would go away. Hey Jackie,

It's tough to say without taking a proper health history, physical exam and blood work. It could be the low blood pressure, could be low iron, there are quite a few possibilities. You're best off going to a Naturopath who will do a more thorough investigation and try to figure out what's causing the exercise-induced fatigue.

I am so glad I found this. I have been having this happen since I was in grade school, I remember my mom used to yell at me to get up because I would get out of the shower and lay down on the floor. No one has ever understood! Even my husband looks at me like I am crazy. I'm 28 now. I have had two kids and through each pregnancy I had to have a lukewarm shower with a window open or a fan on or something so that it didn't get too hot an steamy or else I'd pass out. Tonight I had an episode that was the worst I have had in a while, even while pregnant. I have never been told that I had low blood pressure, except a couple of times at a prenatal exam, but there have been times where I was told my blood pressure should have been a lot higher than it was but it was normal! (i.e. right before giving birth and other severely stressful times in my life)

Dr. Gallant,

Thank you for taking the time to write that great post! Contrary to all of the other posters here, I actually frequently use a very hot bath or hot tub to do precisely this – lower blood pressure that is spiking.
I discovered completely on my own that a long hot bath – often times with magnesium in the form of Epsom salts – would significantly lower blood pressure for me, up to 20 points on both systolic and diastolic.
I am healthy, 44-year-old female, who is been on blood pressure medicine since about age 28. It runs in the family. I'm 5'5 and 125 pounds so weight is not the issue. I could stand to eat healthier, and exercise but I do not add salt to anything, don't eat junk food and live a fairly active lifestyle.
Recently, due to Lyme disease and severe brain fog, I was prescribed a stimulant to help with thinking/clarity. It has been a wonder, but not so for blood pressure. my blood pressure was an issue for two decades prior to Lyme, and the spikes have occurred in direct correlation with the issuance of the stimulant. So other factors are not at the root. I have managed to keep BP in check somewhat, but there are bouts where my blood pressure spikes significantly into the 160/100 range- I have found that getting into a hot bath or hot tub nearly immediately will drop those numbers back into the normal range and keep them there for the rest of the day.
stimulants are certainly not a long-term prospect for me as I already know the side effects are undesired. However in the short term it has been wonderful, and I feel like I found a way to address the spikes. I guess my question for you is if my self-"medicating" hot bath treatment could be causing further long-term complications? Also, generally, for how long must one's BP remain at a constant high to cause damage- & do temporary spikes cause damage over time? I have this (rather naïve, I am sure) theory that temporary blood pressure spikes might actually be giving my heart a "workout" the way aerobic exercise might, and therefore helping it..... I would absolutely love you to validate that theory, and not tell me that I am making rediculous excuses for myself ;)
Thanks a bunch,
Sage

Dr. Justin Gallant ND link
7/17/2015 04:13:19 am

Hey Sage,

Thanks for reading.
I wouldn't say the hot bath treatments are doing any damage, unless you get out too quickly and experience rebound hypertension. Rebound hypertension can be dangerous. The duration of time BP must remain constantly high and do damage would vary from person to person based on their physiology.
The theory of having high blood pressure providing a "workout" for your heart may not be very accurate. High blood pressure will do damage to the arteries and capillaries in almost every part of your body.

Hi Doctor,
This was informative. In fact very close my recent worst experience I had in my life till now. I am very healthy person, sportive, do lot of activities. But, this is what happened to me last night. I had little cold, so I thought why not a hot tub bath to relax my body. I have taken bath in tub several times before, never had any issues. But, last night I was in hot tub for about 30 min everything was fine until I was inside water, then I decided to dry myself up and got up the tub. This is when everything happened. My hands started to shiver ( to be precise tingling feeling that you get usually in the legs when someone sits for long time, then after few seconds it will get alright with blood flow), I thought its something like that, but then within fraction of second this spread to whole of my body, I could not think what was happening, then all of a sudden I fell in the tub. Everything went blank. I got up after sometime sat in bathroom as I could hardly move, and was thinking everything will get ok. Things went worst, I could hardly breath, I could think nothing, then all of suddent my fingers got stiff (it was like my nerves were pulling them) I could not fold my finger to hold on to anything. Then i remembered one my friend telling that his other friend had some issue with sugar and had collapsed once, so I rushed to living room, took sugar bottle and poured as much I could into my mouth, then all of a sudden I was back to normal. few minutes back, I had thought I was almost going to die, but then after taking sugar I got back to normal.
I dont understand the actual reason why it happened. I am just 26, no one in my family has sugar or BP problem. In fact, a week back i had taken tub bath and everything was perfect, but what happened last night is unimaginable. This morning, I went to doctor for checkup and had my BP and sugar tested, and he said everything is normal. I really dont know what happened, now I am scared to take bath again. Could you please tell me if there are various other reasons why this could happen?
Thanks

Hey Ajay,

Keep in mind that blood pressure and blood sugar can vary minute by minute throughout the day. You could have been hypoglycemic or hypotensive while in the bath tub. Given the fact that the sugar helped bring you back I would assume hypoglycemia was the cause of this scary episode. If it happens again you should call emergency services.

The exact things happen to me in the bath or hot tub. I had my blood pressure checked today - 122/78. They always tell me it's good or normal. I'm a 45 yr old and healthy weight and active. Could it be too low? I've had other instances where I'm on the low end of the normal range, but too low for me individually.

Dr. Justin Gallant ND link

Hey Kristin,

Blood pressure varies throughout the day due to several different factors. You could have a totally normal BP but going in the bath or hot tub will drop it.

if I use my hot tub my B.P.will drop in 85-90 over 43 bottom number stays the same I'm tired all the time and high b.p. runs in my family feel lightheaded confused and like shit is there possibly an under lying problem I've had 2 hip surgeries 1st one failed and love hot tub just don't like how it makes me feel after using it

Dr. Justin Gallant ND link

Hey DIane,

85/43mmHg is way too low and will definitely cause symptoms.
If you're having any symptoms there could be an underlying problem.
You're best bet would be to tell the Doctor how you're feeling and get them to do a proper work-up.

I have experienced all of these symptoms the last few times I had been in a hot tub so I can definitely relate. The most recent one was the worst, I fainted, got back up, & then went unconscious once I was put on the couch; I don't remember this part. Luckily my boyfriend was there and we was seconds away from calling 911 until I finally opened my eyes again. Just wanted some advice for the future, what I should do when I start to feel light headed and such or what someone should do to help me. My mom also has experience getting light headed/falling a few times. May have her and I go get checked out.

It sounds like your boyfriend did the right thing but I would definitely call 911 just to have them look you over if you lost consciousness.

Found your article helpful. I have chronic high blood pressure. 225/125 avg. Just diagnosed 3 weeks prior. Previous symptoms inc frequent urination, tingly skin sensation. Just learned heart releases AFN hormone to kidneys/bladder to release fluid when heart enlarges. Dr. put me on Lisinopril 3 weeks ago. Monitored myself regularly and no change in BP for 2 weeks. I was not supposed to come back for 2 months, but insisted this was not working and he changed BP to Lopressor. Now on it for 3 days, very little change in BP. Took reading yesterday before hot steamy shower and after shower, dropped BP from 198/106 to 170/85. Repeated test today with before and after readings of 215/130 to 165/78.
Far better results than I could have hoped for, now how can I bottle it? Joke. I will continue to research this as I attempt to reduce my BP.

I'm hypoglycemic but if I eat to many sweets it makes me extremely sleepy. Last week I ate then I took about an hour nap then got in the got tub. When we got out I almost passed out when my bf gave me some tea and a piece of chocolate I started coming back out of it. He was less then 4ft in front of me and I couldn't see him. It scared us both. Now I'm almost to scared to get back in the hot tub. what should I do to prevent this from happening again?

Dr. Justin Gallant ND link
7/17/2015 04:29:08 am

Hey Loni,

I would work with a healthcare practitioner like your doctor, a naturopath, a nutritionist, etc... to determine why you have hypoglycemia or at least help you fix your diet to prevent hypoglycemia (usually adding more protein and fat helps).
I'd stay away from the sweets and hot tubs for now until you've been properly evaluated and the hypoglycemia is under control.

Thank you for the article.
I am 29 and I have been feeling more and more over the last few years that I may have hypotension. I experience many if not all of the symptoms listed above randomly especially after baths... I also feel as though I have a compromised immune system and seem to get sick often and have a very hard time recovering ever since I had mono as a young teen. How could someone determine themselves weather they have hypotension? As others have said evey time I go to the doc they say it is fine... And if I do have hypotension what can I do to improve it? Is it a matter of exercise and strengthening my heart or is it more likely that it is a symptom of something else or is it just something that you have to learn to live with? I really want to take control of my health and try to research as much as I can and prefer naturopathic/holistic medicine but I've had a hard time finding a good ND in my area and every time I go to my regular doctor they always seem to either suggest a medication or say wait and see if it gets worse... I would appreciate any suggestions and or advice... Thank you.

Hey MJ,

Thanks for your comment.
What area are you from?
You can take your blood pressure at a local pharmacy but it may be normal at that time and only go low when you're in the hot tub.
If it is constantly low it's important to figure out the cause (i.e. low sodium, mitral valve prolapse, low fluid intake, adrenal issues, hypoglycemia, etc...).

I've Always had very good blood pressure. Even through pain like : Passing kidney stones and giving birth naturally to four children. Dr. You spoke about finding out the underlying cause of abnormal blood pressure? I've read so much online searching re: blood pressure, with A lot of advice. Ugh. And, no real answers! Hey Rebecca,

Thanks for your inquiry.
There are several things you can do to help lower blood pressure naturally but you should do them under the supervision of someone like a naturopathic doctor. If you have one in your area, I'd contact them to see if you can work with them. A licensed naturopath will know about medication interactions, proper supplements and have the diagnostic skills to determine what is causing your high blood pressure.

I am trying to lower my high BP by diet, and seem to be on the righttrack..garlic, lemon juice, celery, kale, tumeric, ginger
. My numbers have gone down a lot, and today I was 120/80. BUT I feel tired. Compared to 200/100 last week, I am happy with my new BP. But I don't have energy. Otherwise eating low fat good diet. Does it take time to adjust to a new lower BP?

Dr. Justin Gallant ND link

Hey Nanci,

It's more likely something else causing the fatigue.
It could be hypoglycemia, low iron, not enough protein, etc... Your best bet would be to work with a healthcare professional to determine what the cause of your fatigue is.

Hi-My Mom and I were just talking about something happening when getting into a hot bath. When I step into a hot bubble bath, immediately thereafter I get a really down, low, depressed feeling that last 20 to 30 seconds. my mother said she has the same thing happen to her, and she has high blood pressure. her bath water is not extremely hot, it's comfortably warmer. I don't have high blood pressure and I noticed the same thing. I've been experiencing this ever since I can remember, my whole life. Love the article but it left me with a question. What if the hot tub is not very hot but just "warm"? Is it dafe for me? I have very high BP but love our hot tub where i live. Ive been known to stay in it for as long as an hour. Again, it is not by any means "hot" to the point that many complain it is "too cold". The only side effect i experience is some drowsiness which isually leads to me sleeping well afterwards. I suffer insomnia so this helps as well.

Dr. Justin Gallant ND link
8/3/2015 08:16:23 am

Hey Scott,

Thanks for your question.
The body definitely won't have to work as hard to keep the body cool so there will be less potential issues but either way you just have to make sure you gradually get out of the hot tub rather than springing up too fast.
If you're relaxed, lying down for an hour ,your BP will drop and then once you stand up your body could compensate too quickly and cause some of the symptoms listed above.
I'm sure you'll be fine but just keep in mind that if any symptoms arise after exiting the hot tub they could be related to your blood pressure coming back up too quickly.

Few hours back, had a near to death experience.

Was immersed in the bath tub for nearly 30 minutes. And while I got up I fell down unconscious. Nearly free minutes.

Was tired and unable to get up at all. Then I got up tried to get shower. Again fell down.

Then tried to dry myself with towel again fell down was unconscious for don't know how long.

This is first time am falling unconscious. And later on felt little better now just sitting and browsing. Whether anybody else have experienced something similar.

Doctor, am abroad and away from home, was literally scared.

Tomorrow will show to a doctor and seek his advice. But literally had a near to death experience today.

Hi thanks for explain why you get lightheaded. I gave blood today first time in many years (I am 57) and I was perfectly fine afterwards. I went home about 5 hours afterwards and took a hot bath because my legs were aching. About 2 minutes after I got out I started feeling faint and eventually blacked out for a minute. Very weird. I started thinking about what I had or hadn't eaten. I had eaten several snacks after giving blood but I did not drink any water. That combined with my normally low blood pressure was probably the perfect storm. I appreciate this article it helps me to understand what might have happened.

My husband spent 20 minutes with weights and then about 40 minutes on the stationary bicycle. He then went and sat in the hot tub (not eating breakfast or drinking anything before he went). He felt lightheaded when he stepped out of the hot tub so he sat on a bench. He must have fainted because when he woke up the lifeguard (and paramedics) said his head just gradually fell to the right and he fell off the bench he was sitting on and hit his head. More embarrassed than anything, he's ok now. He has passed out before a couple times from dehydration. He claims he drinks plenty. Is there anything he could take that would help him not pass out (other than drinking more)?

Dr Justin Gallant ND
3/29/2017 06:15:19 pm

Hey Sandra,

Thanks for writing in.

Aside from drinking, he should eat something to prevent hypoglycemia and make sure he's getting electrolytes, especially sodium and potassium.

Get him to let his family doctor or naturopathic doctor know so they can assess him to prevent it from happening in the future.

Thanks for the comprehensive information on the effects of hot tubs and blood pressure.. Sometimes I get migraines and do not like to be dependent on allopathic molecules to adjust my symptoms. Hypothesized that a hot tub would help reduce the headache along the lines of reasoning suggested in your article. Yup, it worked. Normally I want to chill down fast after a tub, but I wanted the vasodilation to remain so I got dressed right away. It worked reasonably well.Feeling real comfortable now.
On another note, I did suffer chronic fatigue for a few years, as many here hav mentioned , and thought it was late onset diabetes got checked, negative. After hundreds of hours on the net I treated myself for adrenal fatigue. Bingo. Vitamin C turned out to be the main key, as the adrenals are big users of C. Only 3grams per day for me[three months] and tapered down to just one gram every few days. also low carb, frequent protein snacks, and quitting work at the end of the day rather than pushing pushing pushing, and meditation.
Thanks again for the good article and your common sense advice to the afflicted.

I'm fairly young and on rare occasions when I get up from a less than half-filled tub (in no more than 10 min and the water is not that hot, it's a little more than warm at most), I would get very dizzy and lightheaded, almost not being able to stand up on my feet. The dizziness would sometimes go on for ten or more minutes if I continue trying to keep standing up, but gets better after I sit or lie down.
And I would not be able to see for maybe half a minute to a minute -
my whole vision goes white. My ears feel like they've been filled with water; I then start hearing this pulsating sound, and cannot hear properly for about half an hour or longer...this usually makes me really sleepy and I tend to fall asleep very quickly after lying down from this, so I can't tell for sure how much longer I experience these symptoms. And I don't know if it's good or bad that I'm going to sleep so quickly.
I've only noticed this to happen when I get pretty close to having my menstrual cycle. But why would that be an issue?

Hi, I have extreme health anxiety .I usually take hot baths and never really worried about it. Today I randomly checked my bp and it went lower than it's ever gone for me. 88/44. I do range high 90's over 60's regularly. I didn't feel much symptoms mostly anxiety from the reading, but I'm wondering could I have killed myself? Am I stressing my body? I suffer from (I'm guessing benign because docs never worry about them) PVC's. And I feel them after this .Probably from stressing.

I have a concern and wondering if you would kindly reply. Yesterday I had to drive around an hour to get to an appointment when I arrived my feet felt kind of tingly and like I could feel my pulse. It eventually stopped and after the appointment I drove home. Later in the night I decided to take a warm bath with Epsom salts (I do this regularly because I have fibromyalgia) and after I got out I started to feel the pulse and tingly sensation again in my feet. My legs also started to feel heavy (almost like they were dead or something) and my feel felt like they were burning. I vaguely felt it in my arm as well but legs were definitely worse. I’ve been regularly seeing a neurologist for another health issue and doctor told me I didn’t have neuropathy or anything after have nerve studies a few weeks ago but this all just started. It’s still here today and it’s a very uncomfortable feeling. Any idea what may be going on? Should I be concerned?
